Sport at Merstham
At Merstham we have been involved in many extra sporting events with schools in our locality.
This year children at Merstham are looking forward to entering a wide range of competitions. Last year we were pleased to have been entered into several sporting tournaments and were tremendously proud of the effort and determination the children showed when competing.
We are also extremely proud to achieve the Bronze ‘Sainsburys School Games Mark’ Award again this year. We are hoping to work towards achieving the Silver Award.
Below are just a few commentaries on how the children worked together to achieve this award.
District Cross Country
Last year we competed in three cross country events in the county and more children were involved compared to previous competitions. We attended two events at Reigate Priory and one at the RAA School. All of the children competed and ran well, in tough winter conditions.
This year we will be entering both events at Reigate Priory which take place early in the spring term. The first race is for the children to practise and we take as many children as possible. The second race is competitive and numbers are restricted for each group and gender.
Merstham play matches in the local league against other schools in the district. These games are scheduled weekly and come to a close in March. It is a great opportunity for the children to improve their match play and put skills into practise. Last year the netball team went from strength to strength throughout the season and we hope to continue this year. The results from the league are collected and grouped in small and large schools. Following the league, we attend the yearly netball tournament at Reigate Priory School. At this tournament the winners of the league are announced and a trophy is presented.

Both netball and football leagues have started and the children are enjoying regular matches. Thank you to all the parents that come to support, it really makes a huge difference.
There are a range of other sporting competitions we will be attending this year such as cricket and rounders in the summer term.
Girls and boys in Key Stage 2 will be chosen to compete at the District Sports Event this year at Reigate Grammar. This year, organisers hope to hose the event as an all-day competition so that the field and track events can be completed together.
At both district sports events in June 2016, the children of Merstham showed fantastic sportsmanship and determination to succeed. They supported each other so well. The progress the children had made from the previous year was outstanding. We had lots of 1st, 2nd and 3rd place runners, jumpers and throwers. Same again this year!
We would like to thank all of the parents who showed their support at both events and when the date for District Sports this coming year is confirmed – add it to your diaries.
Sainsbury’s School Games Day
Another huge success this year and the sun was shining for us in July 2016! The children were split into their house teams – each house having 3 teams. Scores were then collected and added together to get an overall house score!
The event consisted of 12 stations – 10 of which involved physical activities including: running, jumping and throwing.
The children then took part in class races and 1st, 2nd and 3rd place were awarded with stickers to show their success!
Thank you to all the parents who came to support the children – see you all next summer!
